Driving Guide & Places To Go in Volos

Near Volos is the Neolithic village of Dimini which has been excavated over the last few decades. They are far more interesting than your standard prehistoric ruins and will soon be accompanied by a freshly excavated Mycenaean site next door. If you want more archaeology, Sesklo, a couple of miles away is in a beautiful location atop a hill and whilst the site itself is less impressive, the location more than makes up for it.

The city is a little light on decent beaches but if you want to cool off, head for Anavros where the sea is clear and the pebbly beach just about manageable.

The Athanasakeion Archaeological Museum in Volos is a popular visit for tourists having many of the artefacts of local excavations on display. Despite being one of the smaller museums in Greece it has a lot to recommend it.

Out and about from Volos you can drive through the land that was the ancient kingdom of Pelion. Portaria and Makrynitsa are mountain villages which still share vestiges of Pelion architecture in the mansions there.

Mount Pelion is found on a nearby island and is great for hiking as well as the beautiful beaches that line its shores.

Currently serving just under 100,000 passengers a year, the facilities are a little light there with only one café and a small duty free however the airport is due an upgrade to take account of burgeoning passenger numbers.
