Driving Guide & Places To Go in Athens

It’s difficult to know where to start in Athens for there is so much to see. The city is almost the equal of Rome for spectacular archaeological sights and the Acropolis, the old high city, is a must see. The Parthenon, renowned throughout the world, is often mistakenly called the Acropolis and is the iconic temple at the top.

Don’t miss the Agora and Roman Forum either, not far from the Acropolis of which it has a great view. There, amongst lush grass, the remains of the buildings rise from the ground with the pretty Tower of the Winds in the background.

Afterwards, to find out more about all you’ve seen, visit the National Archaeological Museum which has a massive collection of antiquities.

For something different, spend some time in the Parnitha National Park, close to the city, which has spectacular gorges, rivers and caves, great for exploring.

Back in the city, try to eat local food in a traditional restaurant; the food will be so much nicer and you’ll likely get into conversation with an Athenian who’ll want to tell you proudly of their city.

All of this is so much easier to access and enjoy with an Athens hire car so now you’re tempted by the city, take advantage of our tempting deals.

Closest Airports for Athens

Athens Airport is some way out of the city but the twenty mile drive is easily done if you’re collecting an Athens Airport hire car. There’s not a direct route to the centre but follow the Attiki road north to Gerakas before turning west on route 54 into the centre.

14 million people use the airport each year flying in from many European and Middle Eastern destinations. The airport is an east European hub and so gets very busy with transit passengers, especially those from the Greek islands.
