The island is renowned as the setting for the film ‘Mamma Mia’ and by collecting a pre-booked Skopelos hire car when you arrive you’ll be able to seek out the locations from the film.

Don’t forget the Abba CD for when you’re driving around the island. It’s one of the things that unfortunately we don’t include in our low cost car hire deals but there’s plenty we do. Attentive customer service accessible by a variety of means, a range of optional extras such as child seats, roof bars and more; a wide selection of top quality rental cars to choose from as well as a comprehensive package of protection for you and the vehicle.

Driving Guide & Places To Go in Scopelos

Skopelos is the island where the 2008 movie hit ‘Mamma Mia’ was filmed. Thankfully the rush to see the scenery from the film has subsided and many of the crowds have gone home but their legacy has spoiled the island a little. The little church atop a rocky islet with its countless steps to the summit is still there as are the beaches and the pretty quayside but there’s a lot of now dilapidated infrastructure built for the initial crowds but which is now unnecessary.

The church from the film is one of 360 dotted over the island, many of them now closed or in a poor state of repair. If, whilst driving, you see a pretty one, it’s worth stopping for in the idyll with cicadas chirping away, you’ll feel the serenity of the scene and appreciate the time when the churches were thriving.

Skopelos these days is more about the beaches and bars and there are many of each. None of the beaches are huge but Limnonari is considered to be the best. It has fine white sand and enough facilities to be able to make a day of it.

If driving around the island in early summer, your senses will be filled with the sight and scent of the white plums that the island is famous for. They’re usually dried and sold on the roadside or in the local markets. They’re considered a delicacy and rightly so.
