Driving Guide & Places To Go in Santorini

Santorini is one of the most beautiful of the Greek islands and especially in the typical whitewash and blue cliff top villages and towns. Many of them are inaccessible in parts to cars, instead being a maze of alleys and switchbacks that lead you to stunning views.

Santorini’s main claim to fame is the ancient volcano of Thira which blew the island apart millennia ago. Linked by some to the tale of Atlantis, to the fiery pillar that led the Israelites out of Egypt and said to have destroyed the Minoan civilisation, you can get an idea of the event by looking down into the bay formed by the collapse of the cone. The only signs of the volcano today are the steaming pools that form near vents in the sea.

Santorini has great beaches and in a variety of colours, black, red and white. Many are hard to access, making them quiet but without many facilities.

Santorini Airport is on the less populated western part of the island and just north of the town of Kamari. There are many flights from all over Europe but all are seasonal apart from Aegean’s flight from Athens.

Over three quarters of a million passengers use the airport each year and the weight of passengers often causes overcrowding and chaos in the airport. It has a small range of facilities including a duty free and a travel items shop.
